The online broadcast of Above & Beyond's popular weekly Trance Around The World radio show is moving to a new Friday evening timeslot. The show is currently broadcast via the Internet on Tuesday evenings, and syndicated via a worldwide network of FM/Satellite stations. With stations such as XM in the US, Radio DEEA in Romania and RMI FM in Poland all broadcasting the show on Friday evenings, the largest proportion of the show's global listenership now hears it on that day. So Above & Beyond have decided to start producing and airing the online broadcast of the show on Fridays, to make sure it captures that Friday feeling.
Above & Beyond's Tony McGuinness said: "With so many of the show's listeners now tuning in on Friday, we wanted to be in a weekend mood when we make the show, which is full of weekend music in any case. Now our European listeners can tune in while they're getting ready to go out on a Friday night, fans in the Americas can listen at work while they're winding down for the weekend, and our far eastern listeners, er, they still have to get up early don't they?!"
Trance Around The World's exact Friday evening time slot (either 6-8pm UK, 7-9pm UK or 8-10pm UK) will be decided in consultation with Above & Beyond's online community of fans, and the show will continue to be available on playback anytime at www.anjunabeats.com.
To ease the change of date, next week our online listeners will get TWO TATW's. A bonus show ("TATW 169.5") featuring the first two hours of Above & Beyond's recent set in San Juan, Puerto Rico, will air as usual on Tuesday night. TATW 170 will air on Friday night.
Above & Beyond’s Trance Around The World radio show is broadcast weekly in the following countries (local time unless stated) and worldwide via the Internet at www.anjunabeats.com on Fridays (new time tbc) and available on playback anytime.

Latest news from David Guetta

So much has happened since we last spoke! F*** Me I'm Famous kicked off in Ibiza, with a packed Pacha singing, arms held high, to "Love Is Gone", David smashed it and Bob Sinclar was just brilliant. Cathy drew together the most gorgeous and fabulous international glamour-pusses and the DJ's drove the clubbers crazy. The next day, David jetted to Dijon to play, headed to one of his favourite clubs, Le Mad in Switerland the following night, then rushed to Montreal for the Grand Prix on Sunday! F*** Me I'm Famous was the hottest after-party of the F1, so even though he was running on adrenalin and no sleep, David delivered a killer set. Landing in Paris, he had time to kiss baby Elvis before appearing on one of the biggest TV shows in France. At least he had plenty to talk about!

There is huge excitement across the channel for Pop Life, David's third artist album. It's not due to drop there until the end of summer, but with David's playing in the UK for all the Dance festivals, he's treating the clubbers to a sneak preview. The first "Escape To The Park" is in Wales this Saturday and is the sister to Global Gathering, next month, where David's again on the Main Stage - with Erick Morillo.

With the single released in France on Monday (sorry, but the rest of the world will have to wait a while..) it's a pretty relentless time for David. He seems to thrive on no sleep (so much so, he never gets jet-lagged), late nights and music so loud the speakers shake. I'll have whatever he's having please..

Marcus Intalex to release Fabriclive 35

Marcus Intalex, king of the more soulful and innovative side of drum‘n’bass, sits in a slightly uncomfortable position on his throne. He is the one in charge to continue the Fabriclive compilation series, with number 35.

"“Sometimes it’s really difficult because - as the popular sound is moving away from what we do and our sound - I do go to DJ at some places and the crowd really doesn’t like it. It’s just hard sometimes. You kinda gotta take it the way it is. I don’t change my sound because the crowd’s not into it, I can’t", Marcus says.

""What I decided to do is play a broad range of music, some reflecting the club environment, some reflecting the home environment. It leans a little more to the musical side and is quite varied in sound to keep it interesting. I’m well aware that a lot of drum‘n’bass is not particularly listenable for people who like a bit of everything. I’m trying to put a good light on drum‘n’bass and put some tunes on there that are interesting. I wanted to take the best drum‘n’bass out there and put it together to make a good representation of what I think drum‘n’bass is".

Gatecrasher One destroyed by fire

One of UK clubland’s leading institutions goes, literally, up in smoke, as Sheffield's most-loved club burns to the ground

Monday (June 18) saw one of the best-loved and best-known clubbing venues in the UK destroyed by fire.

At 5pm, a passerby dialled 999 when he noticed black smoke pouring out of Gatecrasher One in Sheffield. By 7pm, police were evacuating neighbouring offices and a nearby student hall of residence; at 7.20pm, part of Gatecrasher One (formerly The Republic) collapsed. Happily, though, no-one is believed to have been injured in the blaze.

At the time of writing, the cause of the fire is unknown.

We caught up with Yahel while finishing up his new mix album SUPER SET II, read the interview here.

Israeli DJ /Producer Yahel Sherman is one of the more popular artists to rise from the global psy-trance scene. Along with his fellow Israelis, Infected Mushroom, DJ Yahel has spent the past few years travelling the globe and spreading his sound to ravers and clubbers alike.
With numerous successful mix CDs under his belt plus several highly successful singles released on Tiesto's label,Black Hole, Yahel has solidified his status as an up-and-coming producer and jock to watch (currently ranked at No 28 on the global DJ rankings). Although he isn't committed to a single style, Yahel has a natural affinity with trance side of things. His typical set is highly melodic, floaty, uplifting and catchy as all hell – he brings these elements, and more, into the mix with his new album Super Set II.

We took a moment to catch up with him.

dmadd: You are a busy man, you're always on the go. What do you do for fun in your downtime?
Yahel: When I am home I like to play internet chess. I find it very relaxing. I also like to go fishing but I am not very good at it. I think its sitting around on the beach that I like more than actually catching anything. But I live near the sea and do things lilke walking with my dog Loco everyday.

dmadd: What is the one essential you have to take with you on your travels?
Yahel: My Archos media player. I love watching movies and TV shows on it. I also take my protable chess player. That keeps me occupied on long flights when I can't sleep

dmadd: What's the best part about being an international DJ?
Yahel: Being able to bring my music to people all over the world. I like the feeling of connecting with people through my music. I have to be honest too. I like seeing new cities, and staying in classy hotels, but for the most part its being able to connect with the fans.

dmadd: You've been appearing more and more in America and Canada? What's it been like DJing in North America?
Yahel: There are a lot of Israelis in North America, especially in places like NY, LA and Toronto. They like to support Israeli artists so my shows in those places usually turn into a bit of an Israeli cultural thing. Also the scene is growing. The US is behind Europe on the dance music scene but they are catching up fast.

Louie Vega

Louie Vega’s studio sessions to be unleashed over summer…

Louie Vega is smashing it at the moment. The famous DJ/producer, best known as one half of Masters at Work alongside Kenny Dope, has a flurry of studio activity going on. With a new mix compilation, ‘Lust: A Personal Collection’, out now and blowing up, and a choice selection of remixes and new productions due to drop, summer is indeed looking sunny.
Conceived as a double mix CD to accompany the erotic photography of artist Jonas Larsson, ‘Lust’ sees the first CD plough a soulful house path, while the second is a more downtempo, discofied and sensual affair, featuring an eclectic selection of artists, from Billy Idol to Kid Creole & The Coconuts, representing something of a departure for the maestro. The first time that Louie has worked to such a remit, he found it a chance to express a different side of his musical persona.
“I bumped into Jonas Larsson when I was at the Midem conference in Cannes, and I thought it sounded like a really good concept. He showed me the pictures — he’s a great artist and photographer — and I was blown away. I’ve never done anything like this before, but it was great to get involved,” Vega frothed. He also has some promising projects forthcoming on his own Vega Records, with his new muse Anane figuring prominently.
“We’ve got Anane, with her new single coming in the summer time, and we’re really excited about that. We’ll be putting out her album in the fall.”
Vega has also been given the rare chance to remix a track by salsa king Hector Lavoe — a legend of the Nuyorican soul scene and Vega’s uncle. “They’re making a movie based on the story of his life. We’ve hooked up with Fania Records, and V2 in Europe, and I’m going to remix one of his very big hits. I’m bringing his really street, raw salsa flavour, but I’m adding a house thing to it, and it combines so well.”
For Masters at Work fans, never fear, as there’s plenty to come from the kings of house. “We’ve a new release coming, which is going to be a double mix album by Masters at Work. And we’ve also done a new remix of ‘Love and Happiness’ by River Ocean that’s gonna be coming up in the summertime,” said Louie.

On Tuesday night, June 12th, the students of the Dalton College in The Hague experienced the surprise of a lifetime. The students were in the middle of a big school party, when out of the blue one of their superiors announced that the one and only Tiësto, the ambassador of Dance4Life himself, had arrived.

For a second, the Dalton College was too small for the loud cheers of joy and happiness when the DJ showed up behind the decks on stage. A full hour long Tiësto played a massive set and gave the students a sparkling kick-off for the rest of the night, since by now their school party was in full swing.

The Dalton College was one of the first Dutch schools to participate in the Dance4Life school project, in which the students do activities to raise money for Dance4Life.

"When I finally got to visit Cuba last year for the first time, I felt so very deeply inspired by its atmosphere and the people, that I wanted to capture some of this feeling with me. This album is very different from what I've done in the past, and so is Cuba it seems. It's a country where time has come to a complete standstill, and yet people seem so very happy."

Ibizan clubs closed

The Ibizan government has forced three of the island’s biggest clubs to close.

DC10 and Bora Bora have been ordered to shut their doors, with Amnesia also ordered to remain closed (it was scheduled to open for the summer season on 16th June.) The government said that they had been forced to act after reports from the Guardia Civil, which alleged that drugs had been used and sold in the clubs for the past two seasons and that the clubs had done nothing to curb it.

DC10 was shut down for two months, with Amnesia and Bora Bora both closed for one month. The closures are designed to pressurize the clubs into addressing the alleged drug taking on their premises. Andrea Pelino of Circo Loco, the famed DC10 event, commented: “The government has said that the clubs have to shut down because people can bring drugs inside. Inside the club people are there to enjoy the music and enjoy the party. You can’t control people and what they do.”

The police claimed that during the summer season’s opening weekend, 450 people were found in possession of illegal substances — only a fraction of the 30,000 people who attended the Space and DC10 opening parties alone.

Black Strobe’s latest, the strutting, rockin’ Bo Diddley cover ‘I’m A Man’, out now on Play Louder, is a big industrial strength dose of dancefloor riffage.

With a banging beat and some heavy guitar action, singer Arnaud Rebotini regales us with tales of his excesses and his luck with the ladies. Backed by remixes from Audion and K37, it’s bound to go down a storm with the Parisian electro rockers.

Lifted from their long awaited debut album ‘Burn Your Own Church’ out 11th June, ‘I’m A Man’ is their biggest tune yet.

Armand Van Helden video

Armand Van Helden is back with a killer new single ‘NYC Beat’. Out now on Southern Fried, and taken from his retro album ‘Ghettoblaster’, it’s an idiosyncratic excursion into punk disco, with a vocal refrain more addictive than crack, and a bassline designed to cave your ribcage. That’s a good thing!

Laurie Anderson’s otherworldly electronic track ‘O Superman’, which presaged techno by many years, has been re-released by Nonesuch Records. Originally a surprise UK hit in 1982, the seminal synthpop tune was pulled from Anderson’s futuristic ‘Big Science’ album, with its simultaneous lyrical theme of the deadly allure of technology and a musical theme that embraced electronic wizardry like loops, sampling and technoid percussion — anticipating a whole host of electronic musical genres in the process.

A conceptual artist and part of the same New York set as David Byrne of Talking Heads and Philip Glass, Anderson became an unlikely pop star when her adaptation of 19th century French operatic composer Jules Massenet’s aria ‘O Souverain’, was picked up for release by the tiny New York City indie label 110 Records. A few spins by John Peel led to Warner Bros signing her up and the rest is history.

With a new album dropping next year, for now enjoy this amazing track complete with unsettling video: Laurie Anderson ‘O Superman’ Video

Fancy a free Sander Van Doorn track?

When Sander Van Doorn noticed some cheeky blighter was selling his own unreleased VIP mix of Technotronic's 'Pump Up The Jam' on white label he decided to hit them where it hurts… The pockets!
While Johnny Depp continues to sexify the cut throat world of piracy in the ongoing Pirates Of The Carribean saga, the cold harsh reality of piracy is far from glamorous. Or indeed sexy. Just ask high rising trance/techno DJ/producer Sander Van Doorn…
It's come to Sander's attention that someone's pressed up his own version of Technotronic's 'Pump Up The Jam' and is making a tidy profit from it. The track, now over three years old, was made by Sander as DJ tool while experimenting with his new studio. Besides during his pumping energetic sets, the track never saw the light of day.
Not one to admit defeat, however, Sander is suggesting that anyone who's purchased this sneaky under the counter rip-off should take it back to the record shop where they bought the record and demand their money back. (Frankly at iDJ we're not too sure this will work, but hell, give it a go and tell us how you got on!)
In a two pronged attack, Sander is also set to release the tune as a free download on his MySpace site as of tomorrow (Thursday June 7), so if any of you were thinking about lining the sneaky, cheeky pirates pockets, don't!

Visit www.myspace.com/sandervandoorn for more information.

Proper Education video with a green message is nominated for an award...

The video for Ministry of Sound’s smash hit single by Eric Prydz, Proper Education, (buy tune | watch video) has been nominated in the Best Dance Video category at industry bash the CADS 07 Music Vision Awards.
The striking video highlighted the issue of climate change by featuring a gang of youngsters breaking into London flats to switch TVs off standby and place bricks in toilet cisterns, substituting images of burglary for energy efficiency.
It was conceived in with help from the charity Global Cool – who aim to show that warding off climate change lies in the hands of individuals – and was directed by Marcus Adams, who is also behind the videos to David Guetta Vs The Egg’s Love Don’t Let Me Go (buy tune | watch video) and Fedde Le Grand’s Put Your Hands Up For Detroit (buy tune | watch video).
Prydz previous chart hit, Call On Me, became one of the most sensational music videos of all time when it came out featuring a gyrating gym class of models (buy tune | watch video) so the follow-up needed to be equally provocative.
“There was a lot of anticipation around this video and I was really keen to do something a bit different,” said Prydz at the time.
“Pink Floyd would always use their videos to get a message across and I really wanted to carry on this spirit. It’s not making a grand statement. It’s just simply saying everyone can do a little and it will make a difference."
The tune reached no.2 in the UK charts and was top 10 across Europe.
The video is nominated up against the likes of efforts from Fatboy Slim, Justice Vs Simian, LCD Soundsystem, Tracy Thorn and Unklejam. The results will be announced at a ceremony on June 27th.

Romania’s killer production trio, Livio and Roby featuring George G, a.k.a. Monochrome, won both awards at the prestigious contest for their minimal techno thumper ‘Pearl’, beating six other finalists in the process from countries as diverse as Dubai, Indonesia, Malaysia and Denmark.

The last bank holiday weekend in May brought the epic event to Las Vegas, Nevada in the US. The infamous gambling capital of the globe hosted the final of the competition, in which talented dance music producers from a number of countries went head to head to test their mettle and determine who would be the most promising new producer on Earth. Only one outfit could win, and the latest edition of the competition — which has been running for four years — saw entries from countries as far flung as Croatia and Singapore. With the judges comprising dance music legend Paul Oakenfold and American progressive house heroes Gabriel & Dresden, expectations were high.

In the Tao Nightclub, a lavish, typically Vegas spot with an Oriental theme, the crowd were gathered together for the announcement of the winning track. Tensions were high for the announcement of the two awards. The first, the People’s Choice award, was voted for by the public online at the Heineken Thirst Studio Global Sessions website. Denmark’s DJ Ronin, who scooped the judge’s prize last year at the Thirst Studio do in Cape Town, South Africa, announced the People’s Choice winners to rapturous applause and overjoyed expressions from the Romanian trio Livio, Roby and George G. This joy turned to elation as special guest Paul Oakenfold took to the stage to announce that Livio, Roby and George G were also the overall winners.

Quickly, the trio were bundled off to the world famous Palm Studios in Palms Casino, where a fevered late-night session took place to remix the track alongside Gabriel & Dresden. The US house heads performed a subtle tightening up of the track, transforming it from a main room smasher into a machine-tooled dancefloor leviathan. Returning to the club later with the massive tune in hand, it was dropped to a rapturous response.

Ecstatic with the results, Gabriel & Dresden have signed ‘Pearl’ to their label, Organised Nature, which will ensure that this tough dancefloor beast gets maximum exposure. As well as this fantastic prize, Livio, Roby and George G will receive a pair of state-of-the-art Pioneer DVJ 100s. For more news on the Heineken Thirst Studio event and an interview with Livio and Roby, stay tuned to the DJMag site.

Paul Woolford gets intimate

After ‘Erotic Discourse’, get even closer to Wooly.

We all need a little Intimacy, right? Paul Woolford’s new label, that is. The lauded DJ/producer is launching a brand new imprint with his own ‘Body Double EP’ on 11th June. An excursion into tough, tripped-out techno and mind-mangling electronica, it’s a particularly strong first release for Intimacy. For Woolford, the time was right to unleash his label on the world. “Basically, I’ve had a few dabbles with labels over the years but they’ve always been part of someone else’s programme,” said Paul. “This is the label I’ve always wanted to run since being a teenager. I want to make an impact and do something that’s lasting and is taken very seriously.”

Initially, the name Intimacy sprang from Woolford’s desire to create an outlet for all the different kinds of music he wanted to make — something that could accurately represent what he’s all about. But being such a music fiend, he was tempted to expand the remit to release other unsigned records by artists that he digs. “It’s kind of opened up a bit,” he explained. “There are all these great records and my enthusiasm kind of got the better of me. So I’m signing other things as well, but I’m only going to release music that I fuckin’ love.”

The Intimacy artwork is going to be pretty special, too. With a blank outside sleeve, when you delve inside to grab the record, you’ll see designer and former Output Records head Trevor Jackson’s detailed ménage a trois illustration, rather rude, but hidden away. “Although what he’s done is quite a gratuitous image, it’s not gonna be stuck in your face. Again that goes back to the intimacy thing. You need to search it out,” said Paul.

The man behind the massive ‘Erotic Discourse’ track has plenty of other plans afoot. “Next up is something forthcoming from Jonas Kopp. I’ve done the third release and I’ve been working on a load of material, which picks up where ‘Erotic Discourse’ left off really, because it’s about time I did that.” With a remix of Spektrum’s ‘Kinda New’ also out there and a smattering of summer festival dates, it’s time to get acquainted with Paul Woolford.

It's time to Release Yourself

Roger Sanchez has announced his only UK club appearence this year. Get yourself over to the Koko on June 16 or forever hold your peace.
There are very few DJs how can hold court like the mighty S-Man. Famed for his epic lengthy sets, Roger Sanchez will take the crowd from the fluffiest funk to the deepest darkness and he does so without with the due respect and continuity that's alien to many of his contemporaries.

While Roger can be seen gracing various tents and arenas at this summer's festivals, these sets will be no longer than two hours. In fact there's only one place you'll be able to get a full Rogering this side of Autumn (or possibly NYE), and that's Camden's Kokos on June 16 where the S-Man promises to spin one of his notorious marathon musical missions.

Acting as the official launch for his much anticipated 'Release Yourself Volume 6', this will be a night to remember and comes with support from Audio Jackers, Nathan Larkin and plenty more.

Tiesto Terrorist Threat Hoax

Rumours of alleged death threat appear to be unfounded...

A rumour that superstar DJ Tiesto’s life would be in danger if he played a scheduled gig in Beirut has been all over the dance forums this week, but the story has turned out to be false.
It was said that local terrorist group Fatah al-Islam had directly threatened to kill the DJ if the gig, on July 2nd, takes place.
The story was first reported by Lebanon’s independent news website Ya Libnan, which relies on volunteers to provide much of its proudly uncensored coverage.
But it seems on this occasion there were no grounds to the story and the news service has moved hastily to limit any damage to their own or their country’s reputation.
An statement released last night apologised for publishing the “false rumours”, stating, “At Ya Libnan, we take pride in how we promote Lebanon as a premier tourist destination, and the last thing we want is to instigate unnecessary fear.”
Lebanon has a vibrant, cosmopolitan nightlife culture with amazing beachfront party locations regularly hosting top international DJs like Danny Howells and Paul van Dyk, however recent political and religious trouble in the region has threatened the scene.
The Tiesto rumour may have started as a result of Latin American pop star Shakira’s sudden unexplained cancellation of her world tour dates in Beirut.
But locals are determined that violence will not stop the party, or make visitors fearful of coming to enjoy their welcoming hospitality.
Tiesto himself saw the biggest turn out ever for a party in the Middle East when he played in Lebanon in 2005 - more than 16,000 people turned out to see one of his epic shows then, so he’s sure to receive a hugely enthusiastic welcome on his return.
